What is Reiki Level 1?

Reiki Level 1, called Shoden in Japanese and First Degree in English, is where Reiki training starts. It is for your own hands: you receive your first attunement, learn the hand positions, and learn to treat yourself every day. By the end you can also give Reiki to family, friends and animals.

You spend two days with us at the centre in Tarkeshwor, Kathmandu. Each day is 5 hours of training, with a vegetarian lunch break. No experience is needed, and you do not need to feel anything special for the training to work.

The Jivan Parivartan way

A women-led center teaching in Tarkeshwor, Kathmandu since 2021: thousands of sessions, guests from more than eleven countries. Groups stay small.

Reiki Level 1: what you learn in two days

Your first attunement

The attunement is given on the first training day. It is a short ceremony of about 15 minutes. You sit in a chair with your eyes closed and your hands at your heart while your teacher moves around you, working with breath and symbols. Nothing is done to your body and nothing is asked of you.

Most people notice little during the ceremony. Some notice changes in the days after, in sleep or appetite, or old feelings that come up and pass. This is normal.

Hand positions for treating yourself

Level 1 is contact work. You learn to rest your hands directly on your own body, moving through the positions in turn and letting each one settle before you move to the next. Your teacher supervises while you practise.

Treating family, friends and animals

Once the positions are familiar, you use them on the people close to you, and on animals. Before you leave you treat the other students and are treated by them, so you have given and received Reiki under supervision.

The history of Reiki

Reiki began in Japan in the 1920s with Mikao Usui. We teach in his line, the Usui line, and its history is part of the first day, along with the five principles below.

The five Reiki principles (Gokai)

The five principles are part of the Level 1 syllabus. Usui asked his students to say them each morning and evening.

In English

Just for today:

Do not be angry.

Do not worry.

Be grateful.

Work honestly.

Be kind to others.

In Japanese

今日だけは 怒るな 心配すな 感謝して 業をはげめ 人に親切に

Kyō dake wa (just for today). Okoru na (do not be angry). Shinpai suna (do not worry). Kansha shite (be grateful). Gyō o hageme (work honestly). Hito ni shinsetsu ni (be kind to others).

After the two days: 21 days of self-practice

How the 21 days work

After the attunement the practice is yours: two to three hours of self-practice every day for twenty-one days, at home. You place your hands on yourself only, moving through the positions and letting the energy settle through each centre of the body. Keep to it every day, whether or not you notice anything, because the twenty-one days are what establish the practice.

Guidance while you practise

If questions come up during the 21 days, write to us. Guidance by email after the course is part of the fee.

When you can take Level 2

Level 2 is taught after at least three months of daily Level 1 practice, so it is never on the same trip as Level 1. There is no upper limit: you come back when you are ready.

A day of Reiki Level 1 training

Level 1 runs over two days on the same daily schedule. Training is non-residential: you stay where you like and come to the centre each day.

Who Reiki Level 1 is for

  • Complete beginners

No experience is needed and no special sensitivity. It is normal to feel very little at first.

  • A daily practice for yourself

Level 1 is mostly for you: a practice you can do at home, in your own hands, every day, and share with family and friends.

  • Any faith, or none

Reiki is not a religion and needs no belief. Students here have been Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim and of no faith.

  • When to wait

Reiki is not medical treatment. If you are being treated for something, keep to your doctor's guidance. If you are in an acute crisis, mental or physical, it is better to begin when you are steadier.

  • …you've never done this before

Most of our guests are beginners. No experience is needed.

  • …you're travelling solo

Many guests come on their own. We look after you from arrival to departure.

  • …you're nervous or unsure

Message us first. We answer your questions before you book.

  • …you don't consider yourself “spiritual”

No belief or faith is needed.

Reiki Level 1: frequently asked questions

How much does Reiki Level 1 cost in Nepal?
Reiki Level 1 at Jivan Parivartan is $250 per person. That includes the attunement, the course manual, supervised practice, your Reiki Level 1 certificate with lineage documentation, a vegetarian lunch on both days, email guidance afterwards, and airport pickup and drop to your hotel. A 20% deposit holds your place, and the balance is due on arrival.
How long is Reiki Level 1?
Two days at the centre, each with 5 hours of training and a lunch break. After that come 21 days of self-practice at home, two to three hours a day.
What can I do after Reiki Level 1?
You can treat yourself every day, and give Reiki to family, friends and animals with your hands on the body. Treating other people properly, and sending Reiki at a distance, are taught at Level 2.
Do I need any experience for Reiki Level 1?
No. Level 1 is the starting point, and no special talent or sensitivity is needed.
Can I take Reiki Level 1 and Level 2 on the same trip?
No. Level 2 is taught after at least three months of daily Level 1 practice. Take Level 1 now and come back for Level 2.
What should I bring to Reiki Level 1?
Comfortable clothing you can sit in, since you stay fully clothed throughout, and a notebook. The manual, materials and tea are provided. Eat lightly before the attunement and keep that evening free if you can.
What are the five Reiki principles?
Just for today: do not be angry, do not worry, be grateful, work honestly, be kind to others. In Japanese they are called Gokai, and they are taught at Level 1.
Is the Reiki Level 1 certificate recognised?
Your certificate names your Usui lineage. Reiki has no single global licensing body, so no certificate works like a medical licence anywhere.
