The short answer, if you are coming alone

Jivan Parivartan is a women-led healing centre in Tarkeshwor-5, Kathmandu, founded in 2021 by Maa Nisha Kabir. Women travelling alone can join a 3- or 5-day retreat of meditation, Reiki and singing-bowl healing. The retreat includes airport pickup and a daily check-in, and from November 2026 you can stay at the centre. Groups are 16 at most, and we also run women-only weeks.

Many of the guests who come to us travel on their own, and most of them are women. They usually ask the same three questions before they book: Will I be safe? Who will be with me? Is this real? This page answers those questions plainly, before you pay anything.

Who leads you

Maa Nisha Kabir, and why a woman-led centre

She knows what it takes for a woman to sit alone with herself for a long time, because she did it for two years in a cave.

Maa Nisha's search took her from her village to her first guru, Santa Kabir Das, and then to other teachers and traditions. She practised Vipassana meditation for six years. She then spent two years alone in a cave in Mustang, in silence and meditation. In 2021 she founded Jivan Parivartan below the Nagarjun forest, so that others could do this work with someone beside them.

When you book in advance, she leads the meditation and Reiki on every day of your retreat.

Touch, consent and your comfort

Energy healing means a quiet hour with someone's hands near you. It is reasonable to want to know exactly what will happen.

You stay in charge

  • You stay fully clothed in every session.
  • Before any Reiki, we ask you where you would rather not be touched. There, hands stay just above the body.
  • You can ask for every session to be hands-off.
  • You can ask for a woman to give your healing. If no woman practitioner is free, we tell you before your session.
  • You can stop at any moment, and nothing more is asked of you.

What this is not

  • Reiki and sound healing are not medical treatment and do not diagnose anything.
  • Keep taking any medicine and keep to your doctor's advice.
  • Tell us beforehand if you are pregnant, have had recent surgery, or are being treated for a mental health condition.
  • Strong feelings sometimes come up in silence. If they do, Maa Nisha will sit with you. You don't have to explain anything.

Questions women ask us before booking

Is Kathmandu safe for a woman travelling alone?
Most women who travel alone in Kathmandu have no problems. The common risks are petty theft in crowded areas like Thamel, pushy touts, and unlicensed taxis at night. On this retreat we pick you up at the airport, and we can arrange your hotel and a car to the centre each day. Dress modestly at temples, keep your phone and cash close in crowds, and use a ride app or a car we arrange after dark.
Is the retreat women-only?
Our centre is women-led, not women-only. Regular groups are mixed, and Swami Anish leads the sound sessions. We also run women-only weeks, so ask us for the next dates. You can also book a private 1:1 retreat with Maa Nisha on any dates.
Who will touch me during Reiki?
Only the healer giving your session, and only where you agree. You stay fully clothed. You can ask for hands-off Reiki, or for a woman to give your healing, and you can stop at any time.
Where will I sleep?
From November 2026 you can stay at the centre. Until then, or if you prefer, we book you a hotel in Thamel, and we can arrange a car between the hotel and the centre each day.
Can I join if I am on my period?
Yes, on a private one-to-one retreat. Rest whenever you need to, and tell your teacher if you would like a gentler practice.
What should I wear and bring?
Loose, comfortable clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, plus a warm layer. Kathmandu mornings and evenings are cool from October to March. Bring a shawl for meditation, a water bottle, and any medicine you take.
I have never meditated. Is this for me?
Yes. Most of our guests are beginners. You don't need any experience, belief or flexibility. The teachers adjust every session to you.
Can I add a Reiki Level 1 certificate?
Yes. Many women add Reiki Level 1 training ($250, 2 days) to a 3- or 5-day retreat, and leave with a certificate from Maa Nisha.
Can I continue to the mountains afterwards?
Yes. Some guests go on to Pokhara or a short trek. For a deeper, teacher-led retreat in the mountains, see the Himalayan Silence Retreat in Mustang, also led by Maa Nisha.
